When is DIY a bad idea?
In today’s ever-expanding digital world, do-it-yourself tutorials are readily accessible to anyone willing to roll up their sleeves. While there are situations when DIY can be a cost-effective solution, there are instances where it can cost you more in the long run.
In the world of emergency restoration, there are several reasons why DIY is not only a bad idea but can lead to more damage and create very serious health hazards!
When you can’t see all the water damage
If you have a water damage in your home, the moisture can easily seep into places that you can’t see with the naked eye. There are several ramifications of water soaking into flooring, drywall or any material that cannot be dried with a simple dish towel. If left to sit, water can cause mold growth within a day or two depending on conditions. This can be extremely dangerous to those living in the household. That’s why we use moisture meters and specialized equipment to ensure that we detect and dry out all affected material.
Myths can get it wrong
There is myth that mold can be killed or mitigated by simply dousing it with bleach. However, this can exacerbate the problem! A typical bottle of bleach contains a much higher water content than a professional anti-microbial product. So, bleach is not only less effective, but it also leaves behind an excess amount of water. Because mold is caused by excess water, you don’t want to use a product that will leave moisture behind.
As a side note, it has been our experience that insurance will sometimes not cover damage that is caused by water that was left to sit for an extended period of time.
In many circumstances, DIY can be a cost-effective solution for a lot of people. However, when it comes to water, fire, mold, sewage or asbestos emergencies, do-it-yourself solutions can actually cost you more money and health risks in the end. If you experience this type of emergency in your home or business, the risks of DIY are not worth the effort! Call a restoration expert as soon as possible!
